1970 Show List

By request, I'm continuing my series of Grateful Dead show lists into 1970:

This is the most accurate and up-to-date list of 1970 shows available online. Older setlist sources like Deadbase or Deadlists have many errors that have been perpetuated over time or never got corrected now that those resources are not updated anymore. I have made dozens of updates & corrections: there has been a small trickle of 1970 discoveries in recent years, so the information here differs in many places from older lists.
The last time I put together a show list, Jerrybase hadn't yet come into being, but it has since become the premier site for searching Dead & Garcia shows:
(https://gdsets.com/ is also valuable for its posters, audio links, non-Dead setlists & assorted galleries.)
My scope is more limited - this is just a simple text outline of basic setlists and show links.

Some phantom dates have persisted over the years, either canceled or never played. In general, canceled shows are not listed here, but some rumored shows that were on older show lists but weren't actually played are mentioned to dispel the rumors. For canceled shows, see:

A surprising number of tapes from 1970 came into circulation with the wrong dates attached, and confusion still remains over some dates. Most of the right dates have been figured out, but a few tapes remain mysteries.

This list concentrates on setlists, not on tape details. For timings, song cuts, and tape info, the elderly Deadlists still stands alone:

If only SONGS are listed for a show, it means there's no tape and the songs are known from newspaper reviews, eyewitness memories, or Deadbase. Sometimes these are fairly complete & accurate; other times we just have a hazy memory of a few songs. But there are only a few places where I mark a song as uncertain (?), when it seems doubtful. Occasionally I call out an old Deadbase setlist as questionable when it doesn't match other sources. And I'll note when a reported song is suspiciously absent from the tape of a show.

I tried to link to the best available show source on the Archive. Sometimes there will be both an AUD and an SBD, or an extra source with additional songs, or even competing AUDs on occasion.
There are links to newspaper reviews or Lost Live Dead pages when available. If these refer to a whole run, I just add the link to one show.

This list focuses on the Dead, so Garcia's shows with Wales or Saunders and New Riders shows apart from the Dead are not included; but some notable Dead-on-the-side exceptions are listed at the end.

The New Riders played with the Dead at many shows this year and were a regular part of "An Evening with the Dead," but their sets are not listed here; set numbers refer only to the Dead's sets. For New Riders info, see:

Opening bands are listed separately here:

The Dead had a productive year in the studio, recording two albums - Workingman's Dead in February/March at Pacific High Recording and American Beauty in August/September at Wally Heider's. Studio session dates aren't listed here (they're mostly unknown), but a few outtakes are noted at the end. For a deep dive into the album sessions, spend time with the Deadcast:

Compared to earlier years, the Dead were filmed quite a few times in 1970, with several shows filmed for TV or planned movies; there were even amateur video cameras in the audience at some shows. However, few of these shows are complete on film - for one reason or another, usually only a few songs were captured or survive. Youtube links are included when available (though these tend to vanish over time). For more video links & updates, see:

Some theme jams that were ubiquitous in 1970 (like Feelin' Groovy or Soulful Strut) aren't noted here, but other theme jams that were more unique (like the Main Ten) are listed. Little song-based riffs like Darkness Darkness, China Cat, and St. Stephen pop up here & there parenthetically; the We Bid You Goodnight jam starts out in Alligator, moves to Not Fade Away mid-year, and becomes the coda to Goin' Down the Road in October (where it vanishes from this list).

There were many drum breaks in 1970 (typically in the Other One suite, Good Lovin', and Alligator) - I don't separate these on their own lines but attach them to the preceding song. Good Lovin' usually included a drum break, but not always, so a Good Lovin' listed without Drums goes straight to the jam. Good Lovin' and Not Fade Away often had long drum intros this year, but I don't list those separately, so you won't see a Drums > Not Fade Away unless there's a drum transition from another song. In general I don't list drum breaks unless they're longer than 30 seconds or so.

Yellow Dog Stories are not listed. (But don't worry, Jerrybase has you covered.)

A note on song titles:
- "Dancing in the Street" was the name of the original Martha & the Vandellas song, and how it was printed on the Vintage Dead album in 1970, so that's what I use here. The Dead's rearrangement later in the '70s goes by "Dancin' in the Streets."
- "A Voice From On High" used to be called "I Hear A Voice Calling" in Dead setlists.
- Likewise, "Tell It To Me" used to be known as "Cocaine Blues."
But there other instances where I haven't been a stickler for accuracy:
- I still use the name "Cold Jordan" for the song "Jordan."
- I still use the name "He Was A Friend Of Mine" for the song "Just A Hand To Hold." (I think the Dead's version merits keeping the traditional title.)
- "It's A Man's Man's Man's World" has been reduced to one man.

1970 was the year of acoustic sets. After a couple of tryouts in late '69, the Dead started playing short acoustic portions in the middle of their shows (from Feb-April), before switching in May to a longer separate acoustic set to start the show. Members of the New Riders would join in, and Garcia kept a Fender guitar on-hand to play electric just in these sets. (At the same time they expanded the acoustic sets, he switched back to playing a Gibson SG in the electric sets.) For an acoustic overview, see:
One drummer would play in the acoustic sets, with Bill & Mickey alternating different nights. For a list of which drummers have been identified so far, see:
For more detailed info on Pigpen's rare appearances on harmonica & piano in the acoustic sets, see:

The Dead played over 140 shows in 1970. Unfortunately, soundboard tapes exist for only half of those, as Owsley's luck ran out that year. He had diligently taped the Dead's shows through 1969 and would likely have recorded all of 1970 as well if he'd remained free.
After the New Orleans bust, he wasn't allowed to leave California, and the last show he taped out-of-state was 2/14/70. He still taped local shows up until another bust in July, 7/16 being the last before he was sent off to prison. (Timeline in the comments here - see also his broader legal troubles here.)
The Dead's crew still taped some shows on tour intermittently through the spring - but it's impossible to say just how many, because many reels wandered off haphazardly, never to be returned; so our record of early 1970 is patchy with many gaps. (It's hard not to feel that a lot of the best shows were taken.)
Late 1970 is even worse as the Dead stopped taping themselves at all - some soundboard tapes were made by the intrepid Fillmore East crew & a few other crews elsewhere, but for the most part the shows of summer & fall survive only on audience tapes. Luckily, more audience members had started taping the Dead in 1970, particularly in New York with its concentration of rabid fans.
But the Dead in 1970 were still mostly opposed to audience tapers, and some tapers were busted in the act (for instance on 5/16 and 12/31). Other tapes are incomplete for other reasons, or simply sound terrible, or were never circulated in the first place. Nonetheless, many great shows were only captured on audience tapes.
In December, the Dead got serious about the idea of making another live album and started taping their shows for reference again.

Close to 30 shows from 1970 survive only on audience tapes, and about 40 shows are lost altogether. There are about a dozen other shows from the year where SBD reels circulate for only part of the show - some of these are complete in the Vault, others are covered by audience tapes, but a few otherwise remain incomplete.
An older look at the missing & audience-taped shows of the year is here:
http://deadessays.blogspot.com/2009/08/missing-1970-shows.html (Though it's an old post, it's not entirely superseded since it has many setlist memories in the comments.)

There are Lost Live Dead tour itineraries for part of the year:

REVIEWS:
Background:

The July 1970 "Dead at Midnight" Fillmore East shows are a tangle of confusion. The Fillmore East taping crew missed this run. Most of the circulating audience tapes were misdated, so the 11th & 12th have long been switched. One night is missing - formerly thought to be the 9th, but I think the evidence points to the 10th. (None of our evidence for the "9th" is solidly attached to that date, whereas two attendees on the 10th have recalled songs.) The Deadbase song listing for the 9th is suspect, repeating much of the electric set from the 12th. Deadlists' entry for the 9th notes two unattached songs that used to circulate from an unknown show. The best review from the run mixes up songs from the 11th & 12th.
(A sample comment on the "7/10/70" tape: "I attended 7/10/70 Fillmore East. Your set list is not from that night. The format was the usual acoustic set followed by NRPS then an electric set. Morning Dew was the electric set opener. There was a drum problem that caused a delay. Then we got a Dark Star, Stephen, NFA into Lovelight.")

The newspaper review says the Dead started with Casey Jones & closed with Uncle John, so it's hard to tell where Good Lovin' might fit - possibly in the tape gap before Friend of the Devil.)

(If so, the tape was recorded from a bad spot at the other end of the car.)
Not sure if it's Garcia on pedal steel, but he's on guitar at the end of track 4, and Weir must be on guitar in track 5.

It was one of the first live KSAN broadcasts, and was an off the cuff affair, using KSAN's record library that happened to have a piano in the corner. It was on the Richard Gossett show. KSAN radio was then on Sutter Street in San Francisco."

Garcia attended a Tarot rehearsal (w/ Joe McCord, Tom Constanten & Rubber Band). Bandmembers disagree about whether he also played one of the preview shows in December.
Garcia may also play pedal steel on a set of Tom Constanten's Tarot instrumentals, supposedly with Lesh, Hart, and fiddler Richard Greene, and generally attributed to June or July 1970 - but nothing is known of their origin:

  1. A brief note on David Nelson:
I believe Nelson may have played acoustic guitar on all of the acoustic Cumberland Blues this year. While other early New Riders-assisted songs like Mama Tried and Me & My Uncle were soon dropped from the acoustic sets, the Dead kept a consistent three-guitar acoustic arrangement for Cumberland Blues.
Nelson may appear on more New Speedway Boogies as well. Some of them aren't marked because I can't hear him, but most likely he's there. I would guess he played in most of the acoustic New Speedways (which are frequently next to other songs he did play in like Cumberland), but it's hard to hear two acoustics in that song.

    A brief note on setbreaks:
When the Dead were playing a long electric show, it was actually unusual in 1970 for them to take a setbreak and play two sets. (Acoustic sets aside.) All the way to the fall, it was very rare for them to play two electric sets rather than one long one. We start seeing a few more two-set electric shows in Oct/Nov, but not very consistently. It's only in December that the two-set all-electric show becomes the norm.

  2. Wonderful post! In the Delaney Bramlett "Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad" train video, at 1:27 it actually looks like Garcia who is helping with Bramlett's amp, and then at 3:45 we start to hear pedal steel off-camera, so who knows?

    1. The train jam is a difficult tape to listen to, with the low quality and the "lead" instruments & singers in the distant background. Might have been better if Garcia had stayed off that pedal steel! I wondered if the opening part might sync up with the GDTRFB video clip, but I couldn't discern any overlap.

  3. 11/8/70 was the most difficult show to pick the best source for, with TEN different sources. But by & large these are all various combinations of two original tapes, from Ken Lee & Marty Weinberg.
Lee covered the whole show and generally has better, more open sound. Weinberg paused between songs so his recording is missing tunings and the starts of many songs. (Most Weinberg copies start with Dark Hollow and go to the first 2 minutes of Dancing - the start of Morning Dew and the solo in Baby Blue are cut.)
Most copies combine both sources, although the patches between sources usually sound pretty bad. (For instance, the source switch 2 minutes into Dew is always very jarring.)
The best copy for the show overall is 28609, which supplements Lee's tape with a few patches from 23474, the best of the earlier composites.
The best copy of Weinberg's tape is 125659, which puts together a couple of different Weinberg sources along with some Lee portions to fill out the show. (Not everything is patched though, so it's still incomplete in spots - no Stack O'Lee, for instance.)
But for the end of the show, Not Fade Away & Good Lovin', Lee's tape is plagued by bad bass distortion. Two of the early composites (3339 & 23474) use a different source for the end of the show - probably a Weinberg reel that was later lost - and these are the only two copies that don't have the buzzing bass in this portion.

    1. There wasn't actually a show on that date, but the tape has been provisionally put under 8/1/70.
